Here I am again, staring at a blank page.

It’s a Thursday evening, early September, I’m in my office at my desk and it is the second day in a row that I am working on my craft (writing) after 8pm.

My office is glowing red, no white light of any kind.

Okay, my fur-daughter Daisy just shepherded me out into the living room because I guess this is where I should be, so this is where I shall write.

Where was I?

My living room is glowing red, no white light of any kind.

My entire apartment is red.

I’ve programmed the Philips Hue bulbs in my apartment to turn red at 8pm.

It’s kinda cool when it happens, all the rooms turn from white light to pure red all at the same time.

It’s like I’m in a music video.

But at 8pm I’m supposed to be off ALL devices so I can wind down for bed and get good sleep.

It’s 8:51pm as I write this.

My bedtime is inching ever closer.

Today is the 9th day in a row that I‘ve written a blog post.

I’m 100% committed to honoring my work each day.

I will not rest if I haven’t published a blog post.

But I’m finding it hard to show up at my self-proclaimed perfect time of 11am.

It’s on my calendar, I set alarms for it every day, I let me girlfriend know the plan, and yet I find myself procrastinating until the very last minute.

Why?

Resistance.

Resistance is a crafty little devil.

It takes many forms and it’s hellbent on keeping us from creating.

For me, it uses “facing a blank page” to push me away from creating, to divert my energy, postpone the writing, make another cup of coffee because the first one was over-extracted, check my email, take a shower, clean out my car, check my email, cut my nails, pet my doggy, check my email—basically anything that doesn’t involve sitting down in front of this screen with this empty page that is so blank that I can see my goofy reflection in it.

Facing a blank page has always been a struggle for me, especially during high school and college.

It represents the unknown.

What if the unknown ends up being a bad thing?

Like, what if it reveals that I’m not a good writer?

Or what if I’m actually dumb and whatever I write reveals my dumbness to the world?

My judging, hyper-critical mind has a hard time letting my creative mind just flow and write whatever.

My left brain can’t help but micromanage and cling to the outcome of any writing that I do.

To give my right brain a chance to just create, over the past year I‘ve gone all-in on [Flow Writing](https://acmewong.com/flow-writing/), and I’ve done it almost every day.

I sit down and write 2 pages (hand-written, in my journal), and I do it without stopping, no pausing, no thinking about what I’m writing or mentally editing and trying to make it sound good or right.

In a way, it’s how I practice facing Resistance daily, so that I can push through it and create in spite of it.

Doing that every day does something profound to the subconscious mind.

It reshapes how we see ourselves.

It expands what we are capable of.

Resistance knows I’m too strong to let a blank page stop me now.

It knows it can’t break down the front door anymore and, instead, has to try to sneak in through the side door to throw me off my game.

I see you Resistance.

And I see exactly what you’re trying to sabotage me.

I know you want me to keep procrastinating.

I know you want to throw my world into chaos to get me to stop creating.

But it isn’t going to work, so you can save your energy and just let it go.

Because I will be right back here at 11am tomorrow, facing the unknown and creating something new.

Keep creating,
Acme
