I am distracted.

I could blame the dog being sick and keeping me up all night.

I could blame today's unusual schedule that delayed everything.

I could blame the video game that I've been hooked on lately.

But blame is so unnecessary!

Why not be grateful for the distraction, for that unrelenting yearning to do anything other than sit down and actually make something?

The secret is that when it's easy to create, when we aren't distracted, and we just flow creatively, it doesn't really count.

I mean, of course it counts, but the benefit of easy days is just that we got to make something and everything flowed nicely.

The benefit of hard, distracted days where we don't want to be creative, is that if we choose, against all resistance, to create something, that act does something powerful to our subconscious mind, our identity, our confidence, and the Muse notices that sacrifice.

We could give into distraction and just enjoy something easy, or we could sacrifice our enjoyment to sit down, apply ourselves, and actually complete what we said we would.

That sacrifice is everything.

Even if whatever we make on these hard days kinda sucks, it isn't about the quality of the thing we make, it's about how making the thing improves the quality of who we are becoming as a person.

Why do I write so much about creativity?

It's alive for me.

It's the path I'm walking and living.

It's what I'm succeeding and struggling with.

When I say succeeding, I don't mean that I'm successfully building a following or making money from it.

Success for me is having showed up consistently and done the work.

Today is the 31st day in a row that I've written a blog post when I didn't have to.

Nobody made me write, and on most days I didn't feel like writing.

Today will also be the 13th day in a row that I've filmed and posted a YouTube video.

Even though I have zero YouTube subscribers and nobody reads my writing, I consider these efforts to be successful, meaningful steps in the right direction.

Right now I still kinda suck at everything I'm doing.

And that's okay!

I'll be good later down the road, but I won't get there unless I focus on being good at showing up and delivering what I've promised to deliver: a daily blog post written that day, a daily Instagram carousel of pictures from that day, and a YouTube video that I filmed that day.

It feels like a heavy sacrifice to have to make, but that heaviness is just the ego trying to squirm its way out of having to do work and be responsible.

Responsibility is power.

Being super responsible is a precursor to wielding super power.

So I won't worry about how bad my writing, photography, or videos are, or that nobody is seeing any of it.

This isn't about anyone else.

This is about whether or not I will show up today and tomorrow and the next day and make and share the things that I don't feel like making and sharing in the moment.

I want to be the type of person who has written hundreds or thousands of pages, but most days I don't feel like writing a single page.

I want to be the type of person who has taken hundreds of magical photos, but most days I don't feel like outside and snapping photos.

I want to be the type of person who has made hundreds of YouTube videos that people love, but most days I don't feel like awkwardly talk to a camera.

When I say I don't feel like doing these things, I mean, quite literally, that no part of my body or mind wants anything to do with writing or filming *in the moment*.

I have to push myself to do these things, and now that I'm on a streak of not having missed any days, I use that pressure to force myself to honor the creative acts that I've committed to doing.

In my heart, I truly want to write and film, but that my ego resists with all its might when the time comes for me to actually create.

You don't need to feel like doing the thing you said you'd do to do the thing you said you'd do.

There you go, there's your writer-downer for today.

I say that as if anyone is actually on the other side reading this, hah!
