Just dive in. That’s often easier than dipping one toe into the cold water, then the other toes bit by bit, and then the rest of that single foot. Just dive in. It doesn’t have to be pretty. It doesn’t have to make sense. Creation is messy.

Imagine you’re a sculptor and you want to sculpt a person out of a giant block of stone. Shouldn’t be too hard, right? You’re a sculptor! So you grab your tools, your hammer and chisel and whatever else a sculptor needs, but you realize you don’t have the giant block of stone. No matter! You head off to the stone mining place, where the stone butchers carve out the giant blocks from the side of the mountain.

(If you’re wondering, yes, I have absolutely no idea about sculpting or blocks of stone, but hang in there with me because I’m making a point.)

So you’re at Big Stone Mountain and you give the boss man the dimensions of the giant stone block that you need. He writes them down on his notepad, wipes his sweaty brow with a dirty palm, smearing dirt across his forehead, and he whistles.

“That’s a lotta stone yer lookin’ for.” He looks at you with a grimace. “And I ain’t got nothin’ nowhere near that big. All my guys are workin’ a big project down at Lake Wetwater and they might not be back for a week or two to carve out a block for ya.”

Your heart sinks. Your soul deflates. Wait, but you’re a sculptor! You’ve worked with stone your entire life. You’re a StoneMaster.

You smile at the boss man and say, “No worries. I’m a master sculptor. Why don’t I just go back there and carve out what I need myself, and you give me a discount?”

The boss man looks you up and down, furrowing his brow while simultaneously trying to keep a laugh down. “Have at it!”

And so you get to work. You’ve got all your tools and all the tools they have there. You walk up to the wall of stone and you can already see where the head of your statue will be. You start carving out stone, chiseling, filing, carving some more. You grab this tool and do that, then you grab that tool and do this. Hours pass as you carve the stone wall up, and then more hours pass.

Eventually, boss man makes his way over. “How’s it comin’? Get that stone you need?” He puts on his glasses to get a good look at your progress and finds the wall of stone still fully intact. The wall of stone is still the wall of stone. Except for up there, in the middle, where a little bit has been carved out and he can see a perfectly sculpted nose.

Just dive in. Get messy. Carve out the big block and gradually work down to finer details.
