# Writing Is Foundational

I love YouTube.

We'll get to the writing stuff, but YouTube inspires me, captivates me, but it also sometimes grabs my attention so tightly that I can't pull away for literally hours.

YouTube is my platform. It's my social media. 

The familiar faces I see on YouTube are my friends.

I love it.

I want to be a part of it.

Over the past 8 years (probably longer) I've invested thousands of dollars into cameras, lenses, lighting, microphones, and even a "super computer" for video editing.

What sucks is that no matter how much money I spent, video content never magically materialized.

Buying the stuff never motivated me enough to actually create something.

If anything, spending money on stuff gave me the false impression that I are making progress. 

It gave me permission to feel like I did something, when I didn't really do squat.

So I'm getting back to the basics. 

I'm laying a more solid foundation.

I mean, why do I even want to create YouTube videos and build a brand on that platform to begin with? What's the point? 

To tell stories, to motivate and inspire, to help spread ideas that are worth spreading.

I want to help others.

I want to be of service.

But I don't now how to help. I don't know how to tell good stories. I'm not good at coming up with ideas that can educate, motivate, or inspire.

I could get in front of a fancy schmancy camera and wing it, and I'm a good enough bullshitter to make it look and sound pretty good, but it would lack substance.

So I am laying my foundation as a creator with writing.

I am getting better at working with ideas.

I am getting into a flow where I'm creating stuff, sharing it, and someday I'll get feedback from people who find my writing helpful (or wanted to find it helpful).

Once I do, then I'll launch my YouTube channel.

Writing is, at its core, the practice of working with ideas.

This practice trains the writer to pull threads of thought from nonexistence and weave them into existence in a unique and original way.

How could someone who's good at that not be good at YouTube?!

Right!?

I want to be good at that.

I've probably been resisting getting started with launching a YouTube channel because a part of me knows that to be a great YouTuber, I need to be a great writer.

My writing will inform what I create and share on YouTube.

The better my writing...

- the better my initial ideas for videos,
- the better my brainstorms,
- the better my scripts or outlines,
- the better my overall storytelling,
- the better my understanding of what my audience wants and needs,
- the better my descriptions,
- the better my responses to comments,
- and the list goes on and on.

So writing is foundational to my creative expression. 

Writing opens the door to being a better speaker, to having a better camera presence, to being a better storyteller, and better motivator and educator.

Writing is the journey and I can't even begin to imagine the wonderful destinations that writing will lead me to.

I believe writing changes us. It makes us better. It makes us more of who we are. 

Writing helps us untangle mental knots that we've accumulated over time.

Writing is a creative act.

We are Creators in a world of massive consumerism.

One small daily act of Creation, even writing a single page of jibberish, awakens something in us.
