Create more. Consume less.
Knees weak.
Arms are heavy.
Fortunately there isn't vomit on my sweater... yet.
And I don't eat spaghetti.
But I'm still nervous.
Nervous about this new direction.
Nervous about this new commitment.
Nervous about being seen.
Nervous about being judged.
By you.
I wrote an article every day for the past 14 days, but it was just for my loyal blog readers.
And by loyal blog readers, I'm referring to the only two human beings on the planet who know I have a blog and that I've been writing.
They also happen to be two of the closest people in my life, so the stakes were pretty much nonexistent.
But now that I'm committing to making my writing more public, I feel nervous butterflies flapping around inside me, desperately trying to escape.
That's a good sign, right?
If I didn't care about creating and sharing real stuff, stuff of substance, then I wouldn't feel nervous.
I know that I'll rub some people the wrong way.
I know that trolls will take shots at me for no reason other than to be mean.
I know all that, but I'm still afraid of being humiliated somehow, even though I know that wouldn't happen.
Here's what's most likely to happen:
I create and share stuff online.
The stuff I share will suck.
After a hundred days in a row of creating, my stuff will suck a little less.
But it will still kinda suck.
Then, after another hundred or two hundred days in a row, my stuff will actually be kinda good.
Complete strangers will be like, "Hold up, let him cook. Hmm, this is actually kinda fire. I gotta share this article with my therapist!"
The thought of creating and sharing for a hundred days in a row excites me, even though I know that what I create will mostly suck.
But maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew by leaping from "posting a daily article on my blog for 14 days" to "posting a daily article my blog + Twitter AND ALSO posting a daily Instagram carousel post of snapshots from my day AND ALSO posting a daily YouTube video."
Woooo... immediately a dark and sinister voice in my head whispered, "Why would anyone want to read or see or listen to anything you have to say?"
Wherever that came from, that's gotta be some deep, genetically encoded evolutionary core fear installed deep within the human psyche or the collective consciousness to keep us playing small.
It argues...
"Putting yourself out there is risky."
"If you share who we are, you'll be judged and you'll lose everything."
"You will be exiled from the tribe and left to die alone because you suck and everyone is going to realize how bad you suck."
"It's better to just play it safe."
"It's safer to just consume everything and not create anything."
This fear means well, but this fear is ancient and it is well past its expiration date.
Keeping that fear alive within us will only make us sick and weak of spirit.
We keep that fear alive by postponing, procrastinating, overthinking, distracting, not starting, giving up, or whatever else we do that equates to us playing small and–consciously or unconsciously–avoiding being seen.
So here I am.
I made this for you.
These are my thoughts, my feelings, my hopes and my dreams.
The world is rapidly being taken over by AI and, now more than ever, we need real people like you and me sharing from the heart.
We need people creating from Inspiration, as much as they can, but we can only get better at tapping into Inspiration through the practice of creating consistently.
So in whatever ways you can, please, create more.
Consume less.
We don't have to quit "consuming content" cold turkey.
Consuming is important, especially when it feeds the soul.
But a little more creating and a little less consuming overall = magic.
The world is a brighter place with us all creating more.
