Write Letters
I sat down to write, but the blank page won the staring contest, so I went and took a nap.
I sat down to write again, but I got distracted by social media. People are too clever!
I sat down to write once more, and this time I reminded myself of what I was writing.
Last month, when I first started writing every day, I just said I was "writing a blog post."
Then, I called it "writing an article."
Then, "writing an essay."
Now, I'm calling it "writing a letter."
That feels way less intimidating, doesn't it?
Look, I'm in this for the long-haul, and I need every break I can get–especially when I may have lower-energy days where resistance rises up with greater force and throws its best distractions at me to keep me from creating.
So this is a letter to myself, and to you, to remind us to bring a sense of lightness to whatever creative endeavors we pursue.
Because creativity is light.
Creativity is the transcendence of resistance so that we may bring to life the ideas and inspirations that have chosen us as their channel.
When we get too serious, too clinical, and too rigid with our creative practice, we give resistance the handholds it needs to climb up, grab us, and drag us down into the dark, numbing comfort of whatever our guilty pleasures are.
It could be social media, video games, binge watching anime, or going out and getting schlammered, all while the blank page waits and watches as our streak of creativity is broken.
I intend to create something every day, and I mean that with my whole heart.
I hope you have similar intentions.
I have shown up, written, and shared my writing here on my blog for 22 days in a row now.
I mean, it's only 22 days...
...but it's also like, 22 days.
How am I going to feel on day 222?
Or day 2,222?
Will I still be writing free flowing letters like I've been doing these past few weeks, or will my writing be more structured, focused, and niched down to certain topics?
Or will I be writing stories? Each day diving into a story world unfolding in my imagination and pulling out, through my third eye, the worlds and characters and plot twists, one word at a time?
My guess is that over time I'll have a lot more ideas in general, some of which I expect will be great ideas, and I'll also have a better idea of what brings me to life to write about.
Maybe it'll be business related stuff, or spiritual stuff, or maybe I'll be writing fantasy stories every day.
Or maybe I'll mix it up and write whatever feels most alive for me each day.
I pray for the strength to continue showing up.
I look forward to seeing the writer I become over the next couple hundred days.
How is that strength built?
Through facing resistance and persisting through it.
So I shouldn't be surprised when a ton of resistance comes up and my brain is looking for any way out of doing the work.
It's part of the process.
It's my prayer being answered.
I'm grateful for the resistance, and I will not back down from it.
Not today, Resistance! Not today.
Or tomorrow.
Or ever!
